Frequently Asked Questions

Unless otherwise indicated, all the answers are by Colin Barnes (webmaster of MyBoatBlog.co.uk)

Q: What is the purpose of this website?
A: MyBoatBlog.co.uk is a space on the web where members can keep a web log (blog) of their boating activities.

Q: Why have this website?
A: It all started out as a personal website (www.cladymill.co.uk) with some free space with an ISP.
Whenever I signed up for internet access with freenetname.co.uk they gave me a free domain and 50Mb of free web space. For years this web space was unused and I began to think of some use for it. I then started keeping a blog of boat trips we had made and work that we carried out on Compass Rose.
I then obtained a new domain (MyBoatBlog.co.uk) with full hosting (3Gb space, SQL & PHP) and recreated the site there.

Q: I have registered for the online forums but I can’t access my blogs?
A: Forum membership and site membership are different things. Forum membership only allows access to the forums. To get site membership then please email me at Colin@CladyComputing.co.uk. At present this is a technical restriction. I may be able to combine the two forms of membership in the future.

Q: How can I become a member and have a blog of my own.
A: Just send me an email (Colin@CladyComputing.co.uk) asking for access. There is currently (November 2007) no charge.

Q: What do I get if I become a member?
A: Members will each get:

  • An entry under the “MyBoat” section of the website;
  • Database space for the details of your boat;
  • Database space for your adventures log entries;
  • Database space for your work log entries;
  • Web space & database space for an online picture gallery;
  • Password protected administration pages to enable you to add / edit etc. each of your Blogs / gallery etc.

Q: Can I have a <my name>@myboatblog.co.uk email account?
A: There are currently no plans to provide email services on the myboatblog.co.uk domain. If there is enough interest in this facility then I will consider adding this service. If you would like to register your interest then please email me at Colin@CladyComputing.co.uk.

Q: Are there any restrictions on members regarding blog entries etc.?
A: We are pretty open here. I would ask members to remember though that this is a family website and not to post anything obscene or offensive or add obscene or offensive pictures to their gallery. If anything of this nature is posted or uploaded then I reserve the right to remove it.

Q: How much does it cost?
A: As at 28th November 2007 there is no charge for membership or any other services.
In the future I may be forced to impose a charge in order to cover the cost of running the site. At that time I would hope that services to anyone who is already a member will always remain free. If this is not the case then existing members will have the choice whether to give up their membership or pay the charges.

Q: What is the members’ entry for the Starship Enterprise owned by Captain Kirk all about?
A: This is a test account that I use to try out new features on the site. Feel free to take a look at it but just be aware that everything there may not work correctly.

Q: How is the site funded?
A: The majority of the running costs of the site (web host etc.) come straight out of my pocket. There are Google Ads throughout the site and these generate a few pence per week. If you would like to make a donation towards the running costs of the site then please send it through paypal to colin@cladycomputing.co.uk.

Q: Who is the site hosted by?
A: The site is hosted by UK2.net

Q: I have a question that isn’t covered in the FAQ…
A: Drop me an email to colin@cladycomputing.co.uk and I will try to answer it for you. I may even add the answer to the FAQ.
